Sex differences in the secular changes in pubertal maturation.

چکیده
OBJECTIVE It is a common experience among pediatricians in the industrialized countries that many girls-but many fewer boys-present with secondary sex characteristics at a younger age than normal. This study examines whether there are sex differences in the secular changes toward earlier pubertal maturation. METHODS The author collected the growth data from various studies performed in Greece in the 20th century (from 1928 to 1995) and estimated the age at peak annual height increment in each study by calculating mean increase in height in each successive year. RESULTS In all studies, boys presented peak mean annual height increment at 13 to 14 years of age. Girls did not present a discernible peak height increment until the late 1960s; however, thereafter they presented a peak height increment at 11 to 12 years of age. CONCLUSIONS The data suggest sex differences in the secular changes in pubertal maturation, girls being affected more intensely than boys.

Forty Years Trends in Timing of Pubertal Growth Spurt in 157,000 Danish School Children
BACKGROUND Entering puberty is an important milestone in reproductive life and secular changes in the timing of puberty may be an important indicator of the general reproductive health in a population. Too early puberty is associated with several psychosocial and health problems. The aim of our study was to determine if the age at onset of pubertal growth spurt (OGS) and at peak height velocity...
متن کاملThe Influence of Sex Steroids on Structural Brain Maturation in Adolescence
Puberty reflects a period of hormonal changes, physical maturation and structural brain reorganization. However, little attention has been paid to what extent sex steroids and pituitary hormones are associated with the refinement of brain maturation across adolescent development. Here we used high-resolution structural MRI scans from 215 typically developing individuals between ages 8-25, to ex...

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) on sexual maturation, plasma sex steroids (17β-estradiol, E2 and 17α-hydroxy progesterone (17α OHP)) and thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine, T3 and thyroxin, T4) levels in upstream - migrating Caspian lamprey. During the experiment, 36 fish (24 females and 12 males) in spring 2013 and 36 fish (24 fema...
متن کاملWhite matter development in adolescence: The influence of puberty and implications for affective disorders
There have been rapid advances in understanding a broad range of changes in brain structure and function during adolescence, and a growing interest in identifying which of these neurodevelopmental changes are directly linked with pubertal maturation—at least in part because of their potential to provide insights into the numerous emotional and behavioral health problems that emerge during this ...
متن کاملO-14: Effect of Kisspeptin on Testicular Tissue and Accessory Sex Glands, Seminal Vesicle and Prostate, in Prepubertal Rats
Background: Hypothalamus-derived kisspeptins are critical regulators of reproduction in nearly all mammalian species including the humans. These small peptides mediate their actions through the GnRH loop system. How kisspeptins regulate gonadal maturation in sexually immature male mammals remains elusive. To address this, kisspeptin was administered as subchronic (12 days) twice daily i. p. dos...
